    Staycation 2009

Vacationing at home was the best! No packing, no living out of a suitcase, no major expenses, sleep in your own bed..... I took off the week of our Vacation Bible School.

This wonderful lady flew in from Illinois to help with VBS and spend the week with me! Nita, thanks so much! Thanks for the use of your pictures too. :)

    Two Worlds Merge

Feels like my Northern world & Eastern Shore world finally merged this past weekend; in honor of her 30th birthday, Jen coordinated a canoe/camping trip on Assateague Island. It was great fun!

Notice all that wood! Josh & I had the privilege of paddling it.

Loading the canoes. They wrapped everything in a tarp, since there was pending rain (which we never saw--PTL!)

It was such a lovely evening; we all hopped out and went clamming. Josh tied our canoe around himself, so it wouldn't float away.

    IMG_7267

"Oh yeah! Oh yeah!" (Anthony's code for, "I got one!")

    IMG_7270

Ok, so some of us were more into capturing the moments on camera than actually clamming.

    IMG_7268

Judi got the prize for the biggest "clam". It was actually a Horseshoe crab. IMG_7274

Then it had to ride in OUR canoe--ugh!

Where else can you camp with horses? Course, having them running through one's camp in the middle of the night is a bit unnerving!

It was a really fun time. Hopefully we can do a rerun sometime.

    Fun in Florida!

Jen, Judi and I did a girls' trip to Florida April 1-5. We flew into Orlando (2 hr., nonstop flight from Baltimore), rented a car and house (with a private pool!), and spent four days relaxing and having fun.

Maps & the Kurtzes' GPS were our friends.

    1

Since we couldn't get into our rental house until that eve., we spent Wednesday at Sea World. I loved seeing those huge, beautiful animals. Reminded me how creative God is; He must enjoy variety.

    3

Yes, we WERE having fun, but it's was a LONG day--traveling from MD to FL, walking all over the park, etc.

    13

    Dolphin show

    4

Jen & Judi show their true feelings about the day.

    5

    Whale show

    6

Shopping for groceries--it takes some planning to cook w/o the "staples" of butter, salt & pepper, milk, eggs, etc.

    7

We ate good--and even included fruits & veggies in our diet.

    Before sun....

    10

    After sun.....

    11

Computer time--updating Facebook statuses, staying in touch via Email, and Skype connecting us to our very-missed friend, Marlene, who is half way around the world.

    8

Scrapbooking--we lugged our supplies down; Judi is the one who truly made it worthwhile. Jen & I struggled to be motivated.

    9

UGH! Up at 4; after 2 hrs. of sleep. Headed back to MD.

    12

And then it was over... back to real life. It's only been 2 wks., but I wish I was back there. Sad how one sometimes does not fully enjoy something until it's over.

    EBI Visit

Setta and I made a quick, weekend trip to visit Nita @ Elnora Bible Institute (BMA's Bible School) in Indiana.

I got the idea to try to get 40 hrs. of work in before I left, so I wouldn't need to use vacation time. Made my week busy, but it worked out beauitfully.

On the plane....SO glad we were able to fly--and even out of Salisbury--15 min. from my home! Made the trip MUCH more relaxing.

    IMG_7071

I hadn't been there since I was secretary in 2004. It was neat being back to visit and to see the improvements to the building.

    IMG_7087

Friday night, we went with the school bowling. They had reserved the whole alley. I chose to watch. L to R: Nita, Esther, Setta, Jen

    IMG_7077

Saturday we went shopping and then took it easy. That evening a group of us went to a Mexican restaurant for supper, then played Scum the rest of the evening. It was fun.

    IMG_7079 IMG_7080

Airport layover in Philly. Setta entertaining me with her new book.

    IMG_7089

    Personal entertainment--texting.

    IMG_7092

Thanks, Setta, for being a great traveling companion and, Nita, for being a super host. Loved making more memories with you both.

    Family Weekend - Janes Island

For Christmas last year, the adults in my family decided not to give gifts to each other, but to put money towards a weekend away together. Here’s how it turned out. Merry Cmas in March!

We had a lovely time at Janes Island State Park in Crisfield, Maryland. I’m convinced it’s one of the Eastern Shore’s best kept secrets! It feels like the end of the earth, but that’s part of what makes it lovely. It’s a gorgeous park on the water with tall pines all around….. And the cabin/house we stayed in was fab for us—nothing fancy, but roomy. Thanks to Beth for some of these pics.

There were 4 rooms with 4 bunks in each and 3 ½ baths. The boys camped out in a corner of the big room upstairs.

    IMG_0465

I’m more and more convinced that spending time with people is the best way to cultivate relationships—not giving gifts or spending money or trying to do things for them…. but just being together and talking.

    IMG_0458

The weather was gorgeous (PTL!) and we were all just so relaxed. The kids are old enough now that we didn’t have to stress about them falling in the water. Mom & Beth went prepared to make the weekend special with extra activities. Beth had craft supplies; Mom had gifts—flashlights, silly balloons, foam airplanes, and a treasure hunt.

Sat. afternoon we went on a “field trip” to the Crisfield dock. Mom used to go across the Bay to Smith Island with her nursing job. She did this every other month for 14 years! It was neat seeing her reconnect with the captains of the boats.

I absolutely love this picture of Taylor. I think it's so cute!

Sunday morning we had our own service—Brian & Tara lead the singing, Dad had a sermon, and Mom & Dad shared their testimony to God’s faithfulness through the joys and sorrows of life.

    IMG_0541

All too soon, it was time for us to go home. We parted with sad, but full hearts of a weekend well spent.

    Birthday Tribute

Today has been my sister’s special day (No, not her wedding. That happened almost 16 years ago). Today my sister, Beth, aka city_livin or Hello Beth, turned 3-. Whew, I almost told you! Well, I’m not here to tell you how old she is, though that’s always the most curious information whenever someone mentions a birthday, and since I really don’t think she looks or acts her age (a compliment in this case), I don’t think it’d be embarrassing to tell you, but I didn’t ask her, so I’d better not. (Ugh, that was an Admin’s nightmare of sentence structure.) I’m here, rather, to tell you about our relationship, and how I'm glad we're sisters.

With over a decade difference in age, it’s taken awhile for us to get on common ground. When I was born, she was a preteen; when I was going to first grade, she was graduating; when I was in elementary school, she was my teacher; when I was a preteen, she was getting married; when I was a teenager, she was having kids….. and on our lives have gone. I could never quite catch up.

She endured a lot. Being a teenager and having a toddler sister around HAD to be a pain. I mean, Little Sister had to even SHARE her bedroom for a couple years. And Little Sister was NOT the “seen-and-not-heard” type; she would chatter and ask questions like an exploding volcano. Then there was the singing. Little Sister liked to sing herself to sleep, so sing she would (much to the annoyance of their older brother who slept in the adjacent bedroom and who had to get up early in the mornings to go to work). Most of this I don’t remember; I’m just told.

I do remember calling her “Goblet” when I was really mad at her (it was a term I heard on a radio drama of Joseph from the Bible. I thought it was a big, bad being [guess I was thinking “Goblin”]). Instead of getting mad back, she started laughing! I lost that argument.

I also remember sitting outside her closed bedroom door, listening to her music.

Then came the day I found out she was engaged! NO! I cried and cried—and was mad at Kent (even though I really did like him!). I remember hearing one of her friends telling her how it’ll be neat that I could go visit her. Hmmm… that sounded exciting to me. It was awhile before I was old enough to make the trip alone. Now I love going to her house in the city, shopping at “her” thrift stores, playing games & listening to Odyssey w/ her kids, chatting the night away, drinking coffee, making supper together, etc.

So yes, finally, two sisters, from different biological mothers, born in different parts of the world 11 years apart, who are still at different places in life, but are products of the same environment, have found ways to bond and to enjoy each other. We laugh at and question our differences—in appearance and personality.

Thanks, Beth, for the way you make me feel like a valuable part of you and your family’s lives. You’ve been there for me a lot in the last several years—balancing out my perspective on life. I love you!

    Baltimore--NYC--Snow Hill

This past weekend I traveled to NYC by way of Baltimore (just a bit out of the way, but was worth it!). Rosie flew up from SC and the two of us went to an SMBI friend's wedding. So now I can say I've driven in NYC! Our favorite traveling companion was my sister's GPS; 2nd favorite traveling companion was Dad's EZPass.

Was a neat wedding. Really fun to see the couple so happy and excited!

    Zach & Mary (Roth) Yoder.

    Mary & Zach Cake

Me, Rosie, & Terri (she was a bridesmaid).

    3 Girls

    Orange Group girls--lovely, godly women.

    4 Girls

Sunday morning, Beth & I visited Rob & Naomi Brunk whose newborn is in John's Hopkins. Was special to spend time with them.

Sunday evening back in Snow Hill, I got to see Joanna (Kurtz) Beiler, who lives in Romania.

Was a weekend of travel and spending time with people I don't get to see often.

    A Weekend Away

I was in Grantsville, Maryland visiting Terry & Lola Miller for the weekend. Wilma came too;we missed Dawn. We were attempting to have a little Lab/10-Course Reunion.

Being in that area again brought back memories of previous times visiting this lady—Christi Orendorf. Was fun catching up with her during breakfast at the Casselman on Saturday. Christi&E

Wilma was Josh's faithful playmate. These little boys kept us smiling.

    Reading

After sitting around most of the afternoon, we ventured out into the snow for a walk. It was really pretty!

    Field Bridge Ice Wilma&E

Playing Memory. Go Fish was another favorite. :)  Memory

Spent a couple hours hanging w/ Jen in Baltimore on my way home Sunday. That's always fun.

Taylor's favorite gift was her DS. Here Gpa is listening (notice the earbuds) as she plays.

    Dad&Taylor

Our family christmas with Brians & Kents didn't happen until Jan. 3. It was fun.

Opening presents--we adults didn't exchange gifts; instead we're saving the money we would spend on each other to put towards a family weekend away this year.

Ack! My nephew, Tim, turned 16! He's working on acquiring his driver's license (It's actually fun letting him drive; he does well!).

    Tim

The day of our family cmas, he bought his first vehicle--a '95 Jeep Wrangler. It looks light blue, but it's really teal.

    Jeep1

He got his dad to give "Gma" and me a ride. It's stick shift, so he has to learn to drive it yet.

    JeepRide

I loved being off work for the holidays. It gave me time to hang out, to be spontaneous, and to spend a couple days in Baltimore at Kents.

    Youth New Year's Eve Party--at Jen's.

    Sierra & Andy playing "Buttons".

    New Yrs Eve2

Jen playing Caroms with Josh coaching.

    New Yrs Eve1

Judi & Anthony playing a mean game of Othello.

    Youth3

As Jen said, "she played her quota of games for the year in just one night!" We spent 7+ hours playing games.

Now it's 2009, and it feels different not having any big plans/goals/trips yet for this year. Guess I'm in a "wait-&-see" mode. I know that serving God is an adventure, but I usually want tangible, imminent adventures. It's sure hard to trust!
